How to Read a Supplement Label, Using HoneyPezil's Label A as the Worked Example

Quick answer

Read a supplement label from the top: serving size, then each amount, then % Daily Value, then other ingredients, then any blend. Label A prints niacin as 7.5 mg NE (47% DV), which shows how the pieces fit. Photograph the whole box, because a sales page may list different names.

The order01

In what order should you read a Supplement Facts box?

Read it top to bottom: serving size, amount per serving, percent Daily Value, then the fine print under the box.

Most mistakes come from skipping the first line. An amount only means something next to the serving it belongs to, so a number read alone can mislead you. The label is also the main safeguard you have, because FDA does not approve dietary supplements for safety before they are marketed 1.

The worked example is Label A, the picture we were given. Label B and the sales page FAQ list are different, which is the point of reading your own bottle.

The parts02

What does each part of the box tell you?

Each part answers one question, and the example lines show how.

Parts of the box, with lines from Label A
PartQuestion it answersExample
Serving sizeHow much is one serving?1 capsule a day is the label dose
AmountHow much of each name?L-Arginine 200 mg
UnitOn what scale?Niacin in mg NE, niacin equivalents 2
% Daily ValueHow big against a daily reference?Niacin 47% against a 16 mg value 2
Small percentIs a line tiny?Calcium 18 mg, 1.5% of a 1,300 mg value 3

A Daily Value is a reference, not a target or a limit. A low percent is not a flaw, and a high one is not a prize.

Six steps03

What are the six steps?

Check the serving, the amounts, the units, the percent, the fine print and the match with your other products.

  1. Serving size

Note capsules per serving and servings per bottle.

  2. Amounts

Read each name with its number, not the name alone.

  3. Units

mg, mcg and NE are different scales. Do not compare them blind.

  4. Percent Daily Value

Use it for scale only. A dash or an asterisk means no value is set.

  5. Other ingredients

Shells, fillers and allergen lines sit below the box.

  6. Blends

A blend lists a total weight, not each amount. Ask the seller for the split.

Traps04

What traps catch people?

The common traps are a missing amount, a different list elsewhere and a front label that makes a claim the box does not back.

Good signs

  • Every name has an amount
  • Units are stated
  • Allergens and other ingredients are listed

Warning signs

  • Names with no numbers, as on the sales page ingredient list
  • Two lists that share no ingredient
  • A big front claim and a thin box
Labels can be wrong

What is on a label may not match what is in a product, and FDA has found prescription drugs in products sold as supplements 4. Ask the seller about lot testing.

Your turn05

What do you do with the box once you can read it?

Photograph it, match its first line to a panel and take the photo to your pharmacist.

The label page sets Label A and Label B side by side, and the ingredients page gives each name. Read before you buy, not after.

FAQ06

HoneyPezil questions people ask

What does NE mean on a label?

Niacin equivalents. One NE is 1 mg of niacin, so the label counts niacin and its related forms on one scale.

Is a high percent Daily Value better?

No. It only compares an amount with a daily reference, and it says nothing about benefit or safety.

What is a proprietary blend?

A group of ingredients listed with one total weight. You cannot see each amount, so ask the seller for the split.

What if the sales page and the bottle disagree?

Follow the bottle, photograph it and ask the order desk which list matches your lot.
